Seven-phased polls announced in J&K
New Delhi: The Election Commission of India, or EC, on Sunday announced a seven-phase assembly elections spread over November and December in Jammu and Kashmir, or J&K. The elections to the 87-member assembly will be held on 17, 23 and 30 November and 7, 13, 17 and 24 December. The counting of votes will take place on 28 December. Ten seats would go to the polls in the opening phase and 21 in the last, with the remaining sandwiched in between.
The EC had announced assembly polls to five other states on 14 October, but deferred a decision on J&K due to perceived differences within the panel. “There are various issues that need to be considered. Each person can have a different opinion," chief election commissioner N. Gopalaswami said on Sunday.
