New Delhi: The Indian Navy has commissioned two Water Jet Propelled Fast Attack Craft (WJFACs) christened INS Cankarso and INS Kondul. These are the fifth and sixth in the series of ten WJFACs being developed at a total cost of Rs. 617 crores,. These ships were built by the Kolkata-based Garden Reach Ship Builders and Engineers.
The contract for the entire project was awarded in June 2006, while the first of the ten ships was commissioned in February 2009, the last of the ten ships is likely to be commissioned a year from now.
Indigenously built, these ships, which use water jet propulsion technology, can reach speeds in excess of 35 knots and can detect, engage and destroy fast moving enemy surface craft. The ships are fitted with the CRN-91 gun and Igla missiles and a series of machine guns.
