New Delhi: Initial trends of the Election Commission indicate a victory for Prime Minister Narendra Modi led-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Uttar Pradesh. As of10.08am, the party is leading on 221 of the 313 seats for which trends are available, while the Samajwadi Party (SP) is second at 51 seats and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) is currently at the third position with a lead on 12 seats.
Even the exit polls released on Thursday, a day after polling for the seven-phase state election ended, signalled that the BJP is most likely to emerge as the major victor in the state.
In terms of the party vote share registered so far, BJP remains in the lead at 40.8%, while the BSP has a vote share of 22.4% compared to the SP at 21.3%.

However, these trends are based on postal ballots and may or may not endure.
The UP election is witnessing a tight three-cornered contest. The BJP has made significant inroads in Uttar Pradesh after having swept the state, riding on the popularity of Modi in the 2014 Lok Sabha election. It is being seen as a major challenger to UP chief minister Akhilesh Yadav-led SP, which is in an alliance with the Rahul Gandhi-led Congress party, and Mayawati-led BSP.
While Yadav is looking for a second term in the state, wooing voters with his development narrative, Mayawati is trying to come back to power after a defeat in 2012, followed by a complete rout in the 2014 Lok Sabha election.
In the 2012 election, the SP had formed a majority government with 224 seats, BSP had finished second at 80, while the BJP was number three with 47 seats.
