This is according to the aviation ministry, which is hoping to raise a total of about 2,400 crore in budget allocations in the forthcoming monsoon session of Parliament. Till recently, the amount due from other government departments, mainly the ministries of home and external affairs, was ₹ 900 crore.

With granular household-level data at its disposal from the recently released Socio Economic and Caste Census, the government is planning to individually target families for welfare schemes. For example, families that don’t have proper houses will be covered under ‘Housing for all’. And those surviving on begging or charity will be covered under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme. The targeting of beneficiaries will be initially rolled out in 56,000 out of 238,000 gram panchayats, the local government unit at the village level.

A mammoth religious festival that takes place once in 144 years starts Tuesday at east and west Godavari districts in Andhra Pradesh. Maha Pushkaram, to be celebrated for 12 days on the banks of River Godavari around Rajahmundry, is a special edition of Pushkaram, which is celebrated once in 12 years. Over 35 million to 40 million people are expected. The government has set aside ₹ 1,500 crore for Pushkaram-related work. The core of the festival—like the Kumbh Mela in the north—is a dip in the river from one of the 263 ghats.
