India’s metro rail map

The first stretch of the Chennai metro was opened to the public on Monday. Here's a look at the other projects in the country

The first stretch—a 10-km-long line between the Koyambedu and Alandur areas of Chennai—was opened to the people of Tamil Nadu’s capital on Monday, presenting the city with a modern commuting option. Here’s a look at the metro rail projects in Indian cities.

Chennai Metro Rail Project

Total Length: 45km in I Phase

Estimated cost: 14,600 crore

I Phase involve two corridors

I Corridor (23km) linking Washermenpet in North Chennai and Meenambakkam Airport in South Chennai.

II Corridor (22km) connecting Chennai Central and St Thomas Mount.

Of the total length, about 23km will be underground.

Kochi Metro Rail Project

A 25.612-km stretch, running between Aluva and Petta, is estimated to cost 5,181.79 crore. The project is totally elevated.

A trial run on the first phase of the project connecting Aluva and Maharajas College, a distance of 18km, is expected to start in September 2016.

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Ltd is the implementing agency for the project.

Hyderabad Metro Rail Project

Being built at an estimated cost of 14,132 crore, the metro line spanning 72km will connect three high density corridors of the city and is totally elevated.

I Corridor links Miyapur and L B Nagar (29km)

II Corridor connects JBS and Falaknuma (15km)

III Corridor links Nagole and Shilparamam (28km)

Larsen & Toubro Ltd is the concessionaire for the project.

Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd

Total Length: 42.3km

Operational:

Reach I connecting M G Road and Baiyappanahalli (6.7km)

Reach 3 connecting Sampige Road and Yeswanthpur (5.1km)

Reach 3A connecting Yeswanthpur and Peenya Industrial Area (4.8km)

Jaipur Metro Rail Corporation Ltd

Total length: 35km

Estimated Cost: 9,732 crore

The East-West Corridor from Mansarovar to Badi Chaupar, with a total length of 12.067km, is being executed in Phase I of the project. The North-South Corridor from Ambabari to Sitapura with a total length of 23.099km will be built in phase-II.

Of the total length, 27km will be elevated while the balance will be underground.

The first stretch of the Jaipur Metro, covering 9.63km, from Mansarovar to Chandpole, will start operations by December.
