Mumbai: The National Human Rights Commission has directed the Maharashtra government to pay a compensation of 50,000 each to the two girls who were detained by the Thane rural police for protesting on Facebook against a total bandh in the state following the death of Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray.

An NHRC press release said it had received no response to notices, reminders and other communication to the Maharashtra government asking why monetary compensation should not be paid to girls who were wrongfully detained on false charges. Hence, the commission said, it was directing Maharashtra government to pay compensation of 50,000 each to both these girls and also directed state’s chief secretary J.H. Saharia to send a compliance report within four weeks.

The commission also warned that if state government failed to act on its direction, it will be forced to take coercive action.

While college student Shaheen Dhada, a resident of Palghar in Thane district, 110 km north of Mumbai had voiced her protest against the bandh on Facebook, her friend Reenu Srinivasan had ‘liked’ the post. Following complaints, both were arrested by the Thane rural police. The Sena activists also ransacked Shaheen’s uncle Dr.Abdul Gafar Dhada’s clinic in Palghar following the post.
