Chennai: Uncertainty continues over the health status of Tamil Nadu chief minister J. Jayalalithaa, who has so far spent 20 days in hospital.

Amid growing concern on the CM’s health, especially after her portfolios were handed over to state finance minister O. Panneerselvam, the top brass of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) visited Apollo hospital on Wednesday. Panneerselvam was CM for eight months in 2014-15 when Jayalalithaa was in jail.

Finance minister Arun Jaitley and BJP president Amit Shah spent nearly 30 minutes in the hospital, but left without speaking to the media. However, they later took to the micro blogging site Twitter.

While Jaitley tweeted: “Visited Apollo hospital Chennai today. I wish J Jayalalithaa Ji, Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu a speedy recovery," his colleague Shah said, “Visited Apollo Hospital in Chennai to enquire about the health of Tamil Nadu CM J Jayalalithaa Ji. I wish and pray for her speedy recovery."

A Raj Bhavan release on Tuesday night said that Panneerselvam will handle all the portfolios of Jayalalithaa and that she will continue as chief minister without portfolio.

Along with his existing portfolios, Panneerselvam will also handle public, Indian Administrative Service, Indian Police Service, Indian Forest Service, general administration, district revenue officers, police and home ministry.

Meanwhile, opposition Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leader M. Karunanidhi continued to express his concern, claiming the CM’s incapacity was hurting the state.

The latest health bulletin on Monday said that the 68-year-old “is being constantly monitored by intensivists and other consultants in the expert panel" and “continues to be under treatment."

“Necessary respiratory support, antibiotics, nutrition, supportive therapy and passive physiotherapy are being given," the bulletin said.

Jayalalithaa was hospitalised on 22 September.
