Ahmedabad: The budget session of Gujarat assembly was disrupted on Monday by Congress MLAs, dressed in black, protesting against the alleged involvement of local Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders in a sex racket and rape in Kutch district.

Assembly speaker Ramanlal Vora suspended the protesting Congress legislators after they tried to interrupt the house on at least three occasions while some of them rushed to the well, shouting anti-government slogans. Congress MLAs including Shaktisinh Gohil and leader of the opposition Shankarsinh Vaghela, who were not among those suspended by the speaker, staged a walk-out.

The Congress, which is the main opposition party in Gujarat, had launched a three-day march on Saturday called ‘Beti Bachao Andolan’ (Save the Daughter campaign) to highlight the gang rape from Naliya in Kutch, where the incident took place, to Gandhinagar, 550km away.

On Monday, thousands of Congress party workers participating in the protest march reached Gandhinagar to protest the incident just a few km from the state assembly, where the budget session was being held.

Congress MLAs shouted slogans of “beti bachao, balatkariyo se beti bachao’’ (save daughters from rapists), forcing governor O.P. Kohli to cut short his customary address to the house at the beginning of the session.

Vaghela of Congress said in a press statement later in the day that his party has demanded that the enquiry into the Naliya gang rape case should be handed over to a judge of the Gujarat high court.

According to an FIR filed with the Kutch police in late January, the 24-year-old victim alleged that she had been repeatedly abused and raped by at least nine men on different occasions. She said the accused were running a sex racket in Kutch district and forced victims to have sex after blackmailing them by making a video of the act. The Kutch police set up a special investigation team and earlier this month arrested eight people, including four local BJP leaders who were suspended from the party after their names came up in the investigation.

The Aam Aadmi Party on Monday said that the police had detained about 100 of its members after they reached outside the chief minister’s home in Gandhinagar to protest against the Naliya rape and sex scandal.
