New Delhi: AIADMK leader T.T.V. Dinakaran was arrested by the Delhi police on Tuesday night after four days of grilling in the EC bribery case.

Dinakaran was accused of trying to bribe an Election Commission (EC) official to retain the AIADMK symbol of two leaves for his party, AIADMK (Amma), for the RK Nagar bypolls in Tamil Nadu.

The RK Nagar constituency was held by former Tamil Nadu chief minister J. Jayalalithaa until her death on 5 December 2016, necessitating the bypolls.

“Dinakaran is being held in Delhi where he was brought in for questioning. We cannot reveal more as the investigation is still on," said a senior Delhi police official, requesting anonymity.

Senior police officials also revealed that Dinakaran has admitted to having links with Sukesh Chandrasekhar, the middleman who had allegedly facilitated the EC bribe deal.

The Delhi police had on 17 April registered a case against Dinakaran for offering a Rs50 crore bribe to an EC official in exchange for the party’s symbol, which was frozen after a dispute over its usage between conflicting factions in the AIADMK couldn’t be settled.

The Delhi police arrested Chandrasekhar from a hotel in Delhi on Sunday night.

The arrests came amid apparent merger attempts by the two factions of the AIADMK—one headed by Dinakaran’s aunt V.K.Sasikala and the other by ousted chief minister O. Panneerselvam.
