US team to advise Pakistan on economy
Washington: A high level team of US officials is on its way to Pakistan to discuss mechanisms to help Islamabad come out of the economic crisis, special envoy to the Pak-Afghan region, Richard Holbrooke has said.
“We have an integrated White House, (Department of) Treasury and State Department team on its way to Pakistan now to talk to them about how we can help their economy more," Holbrooke told a key Congressional panel on Pakistan and Afghanistan yesterday.
The team is headed by David Lipton the White House’s international economic expert he said, during an appearance before a joint Congressional hearing in Washington.
Supporting Pakistan in every possible way is of the highest priority to the US, he said. Pakistan is also facing deadlines from IMF loans.
“They’re facing a very tough set of problems and we want to show assistance in every way," Holbrooke said.
Holbrooke said the team, headed by Lipton, will advise Pakistan about the future of their economy, which is currently in debt to the IMF after taking out an emergency loan of $ 6.7 bn last year.
