New Delhi: Concerned over growing problem of garbage disposal in cities, Union Urban Development Ministry has written to Human Resource Development Ministry suggesting introduction of solid waste management as a subject in school curriculum.
“The issue is a growing concern for us and needs to be addressed in a holistic manner,” M. Ramachandra, Urban Development Secretary, told PTI.
“There is a need to educate school children about the need for reducing, reusing and recycling of garbage. We have written to the HRD Ministry to have a curriculum with accurate waste management information that encourages children to look at the issue seriously,” he said.
Solid waste management has emerged as a major environmental issue in recent times in the country. According to a rough estimate, more than 45 million tonnes of waste is generated from urban centres in India.
