How the eastern peripheral highway will benefit Delhi

New Delhi: The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs on Thursday gave its approval for developing a 135km eastern peripheral expressway.
“The cabinet has also given its approval of investment and award decision of the project of eastern peripheral highway. 135 km, which will cover states of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh in six packages of six laning," said finance minister Arun Jaitley, addressing a press conference on the decisions taken by the cabinet.
“The arc highway that was getting made will cover the distance between Kundli and Palwal so that the circle is complete," Jaitley added.
How does it benefit Delhi residents?
This will be like a peripheral road around Delhi, so traffic which is not destined for Delhi will not need to pass through the main city. At present, more than 500,000 vehicles enter Delhi daily.
The road will also help check growing traffic and pollution in the city.
The government believes it will help generate employment in the states of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh as well.
“The development of this stretch will also help in uplifting the socio-economic condition of the concerned regions of the state and would also increase employment potential for local labourers for project activities," a statement released by the government said.
The project will cost ₹ 7,558 crore, including ₹ 1,795.20 crore, for land acquisition, resettlement and rehabilitation and other pre-construction activities and work will be carried out under engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) basis.
