News in numbers: Patanjali doubles sale; Infibeam’s IPO subscribed 21% on Day 1
Infibeam IPO receives muted response across segments on the first day; Patanjali's provisional turnover more than doubles to Rs3,266.97 crore in the first 10 months of 2015-16
21%
What is it? The percentage of shares subscribed in Infibeam’s 450-crore initial public offer (IPO) on its first day.
Why is it important? India’s first e-commerce IPO received muted response across segments on the first day (despite reported attempts to promote it on social media). The portion for qualified institutional buyers was subscribed 22%, non-institutional investors received 21%, while the retail investors’ category was subscribed 17%. This IPO is being keenly watched to measure investors’ appetite for listing of other online retail firms even though Infibeam is much smaller than its rivals, including Flipkart, Amazon and Snapdeal.
Tell me more: Infibeam did not allot any shares to anchor investors, who are a committed set of investors invited ahead of an IPO to improve price discovery and help provide confidence to other investors in the issue.

What is it? The number of rail links India is reportedly looking to build with Nepal.
Why is it important? The rail links would help boost India’s economic ties with the landlocked country, which depends entirely on India for fuel and for most of its food and medicinal supplies. India accounts for over 60% of Nepal’s foreign trade. This move could also be a part of India’s efforts to counter the growing influence of China on Nepal, though unnamed government officials have denied it.
Tell me more: Nepal doesn’t have a railway system of its own. China and Nepal agreed to build a strategic railway link through Tibet on Monday and signed 10 agreements, including a transit trade treaty, which would end Nepal’s total dependence on Indian sea ports for third-country trade.

What is it? The current global carbon emissions a year, mainly from burning fossil fuels, according to a study.
Why is it important? This is the highest in 66 million years, since the time when dinosaurs are believed to have gone extinct. The rate of emissions has surpassed the emissions of 1.1 billion tonnes a year spread over 4,000 years at the start of the biggest known natural surge in fossil records (around 56 million years ago). That surge may have been due to the release of frozen stores of greenhouse gases from below the seabed, damaging marine life and increasing temperatures by an estimated 5 degree Celsius.
Tell me more: According to studies by the United Nations, unchecked carbon emissions could cause temperatures to increase by up to 4.8 degree Celsius this century, bringing about floods, droughts and powerful storms. Ecosystem disruptions in the future could “exceed the relatively limited extinctions observed" during the warming about 56 million years ago.

What is it? The starting price of Apple’s new iPhone called the iPhone SE (short for “special edition") launched in the US on Monday.
Why is it important? This is the technology firm’s least expensive and is seen as a move to enter the low-priced smartphone segment dominated by models running on Google’s operating system, Android. This launch is also expected to increase Apple’s overall sales of iPhones, which is likely to decline for the first time ever this quarter on a year-on-year basis.
Tell me more: This is Apple’s second attempt at entering the entry-level or mid-tier market. In 2013, the company launched iPhone 5c which was later dropped from its list as it failed to enthuse customers.
₹ 3,266.97 crore
What is it? Patanjali Ayurved’s provisional turnover in the first 10 months of 2015-16, according to Brickwork Ratings.
Why is it important? This is more than double of that recorded in the same period in 2014-15. The 10-year-old company’s provisional turnover is almost half of the revenues clocked by other FMCG majors such as Dabur and Godrej Consumer Products in the first nine months of 2015-16. Patanjali Ayurved’s promoters Acharya Bal Krishan and Swami Muktanand are close associates of Baba Ramdev, popular yoga guru and also the brand ambassador of the company. Baba Ramdev says he doesn’t own any equity in the company nor takes any money to promote its products.
Tell me more: The company doubled its profits to ₹ 308.79 crore in 2014-15 from ₹ 154.7 crore in 2013-14.
