Rajya Sabha approves Sen’s impeachment

New Delhi: The Rajya Saha approved the impeachment of justice Soumitra Sen of the Calcutta high court for misappropriation of funds and misrepresentation of facts.

This is the first time that an impeachment motion has been passed by any house of India’s parliament. The motion was passed by 172 votes to 16 with one abstention.

The motion has to be passed by the Lok Sabha in the current session before it goes to president Pratibha Patil.
