New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday told the Rajya Sabha that his government is “making all efforts" to trace the files that are required by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in its probe into the allotment of captive coal blocks.

Singh said that if the files are found missing, the government “will carry out a thorough investigation" and that those guilty will be punished. He added that the government had given CBI more than 150,000 papers related to the allocation of the coal blocks.

CBI is investigating the allocation of captive coal blocks between 1993 and 2010.

Meanwhile, a senior CBI official said that as per the order of the Supreme Court, the agency has handed over a consolidated list of the missing files to the government. This official declined to give more details on the matter.

On 29 August, the Supreme Court, which is monitoring investigations into the case, had asked CBI to furnish a list of files it wants within five days.

On 23 August, the government had said that only seven files were missing.

Coal minister Sriprakash Jaiswal had said in Parliament that in a 14 August letter, CBI had asked the ministry for 43 files, 19 applications of coal block allottees, 157 applications of private companies that were not allotted coal blocks before 28 June 2004, “17 other documents" and clarifications on nine points.
