Bangladesh, India efforts on to reduce trade gap
Dhaka: Bangladesh on Wednesday said its ties with India have improved and the two neighbours are progressing towards resolving the outstanding issues, including trade gap and fixing maritime boundary.
Bangladesh foreign minister Dipu Moni said Dhaka-New Delhi ties witnessed a major development in the past one month with India agreeing to fix the maritime boundary on the basis of “equitable distance", the principle being pursued by Bangladesh.
Moni, in her first formal press conference after the installation of the prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s government, said Bangladesh has several outstanding issues with India including trade gap and maritime boundary.
Since last month’s visit of external affairs minister Pranab Mukherjee, the two neighbours were progressing towards resolving the issues.
She said India has sought a list of Bangladeshi products which Dhaka wanted to export at zero tariff cost. “We are now preparing the list," she said.
Moni said militancy or terrorism was yet to be a critical challenge for Bangladesh’s image abroad as the world witnessed a landslide election of a “non-communal" in the 29 December polls.
“I don’t think it is a critical challenge for Bangladesh’s image yet," she said.
