Statement twisted by media: R.R. Patil
Says will move breach of privilege motion against media houses
Mumbai: Maharashtra home minister R.R. Patil on Wednesday said he would table a ‘breach of privilege motion’ against television channels and websites which had earlier quoted him as saying that rapes could not be stopped even if a policeman was stationed at every home.
The minister said his statement, made during a discussion in the state legislative council, was twisted by the media outlets. He denied making the controversial statement attributed to him.
“I will move a breach of privilege motion against all those media houses who deliberately twisted my statement and I will pursue the matter till its reaches its logical end," Patil said.
Anyone found breaching the privileges of a member of Parliament, member of legislative assembly or council can be given simple imprisonment up to six months.
In the recent past, Maharashtra legislature found two journalists guilty of breach of privilege and sentenced them to jail. They were Marathi news channel IBN Lokmat’s editor Nikhil Wagle and Marathi Newspaper Navakal’s editor Jayshree Pande-Khadilkar.
