Revenue generation is Mukherjee’s challenge: Tewari
New Delhi: Come Monday, and Budget 2009 will be unveiled. Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari says the finance minister will have to walk on a tight rope even though India is cushioned from the impact of the global economic meltdown.

But the Congress spokesperson is assertive that the party is not dictating terms to finance minister Pranab Mukherjee. According to Tewari, the finance minister is inundated with demands and suggestions from industrial bodies and captains of industry, but nobody suggests him on how to increase revenue.

Naxalism is likely to be a focus area for the Mukherjee, said Tewari. It is a “heartland rebellion" and concerns the tribal population and needs to be tackled with sensitivity, the spokesperson said.

It is pertinent for the government to take strong measures to control the spiraling fiscal deficit, the Congress spokesperson said. The upcoming budget is of paramount importance to the Union government as it set the roadmap for the next five year of UPA governance.
