NSDC project aims at 5 lakh jobs in 10 years

New Delhi: The National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC), a Central government agency, has tied up with recruitment company TMI Group to help graduates from smaller cities and towns get jobs in the corporate sector.

Under the project, TMI will set up employability assessment centres at 900 colleges across the country, where graduates will be trained to meet specific job requirements before they start working.

“We are looking for one- to three-month courses. The process is demand driven, which means jobs will be created as per the need of the industry," said T. Muralidhar, executive chairman of TMI.

Muralidhar said only about 20% of graduates find jobs in India as they lack job readiness. Smaller cities and towns are worse off, as companies are unwilling to go there to hire and train people. “The effort is to link education with employment," he said.

The project aims to provide nearly 5 lakh jobs over 10 years.

“This is primarily addressed to meet the growing demand for graduate talent in the corporate sector without compromising on the candidates’ interest," said Dilip Chenoy, managing director and chief executive of NSDC.

Ravi Ramakrishnan, managing director of C&K Management Ltd, a subsidiary of TMI, said before joining the course, each student will get an offer letter from a company or organisation with a salary break-up. The course fee, Rs12,000-30,000, will be split equally by the graduates and their employers.

“Industry and academic interaction in our education system is not very encouraging, hence many graduates are unemployable," said V. Sharma, director, training development and placement at Hindustan College of Science and Technology, Agra, which plans to host one of the training centres under the project. “The NSDC and TMI initiative will help students get a customized course as well as a job."
