1. Merida, Yucatan. Portal to mythical Mayan underworld. Archeologists discover a maze of stone temples in underground caves, which ancient Mayans believed was a portal where dead souls entered the underworld Self-induced climate change could have destroyed Maya civilization. Scientists working with new satellite technology suggest Mayan agriculture techniques and exploitation of wetlands induced local drought and rise in temperatures.
2. Tulancingo, Mexico. Mysterious pyramid. Stone sculptures found in central Mexico may point to a previously unknown culture that likely built a mysterious pyramid in the region.
3. Cuzco, Peru. Inca skull surgeons. A study of 411 skulls excavated from 11 burial sites in the Inca capital of Cuzco, Peru, revealed that 66 had perforations. Researchers found that by the 1400s, survival rates approached 90%.
