New Delhi: The Union Textile Ministry has launched a comprehensive health insurance scheme for handicardt artisans across the country, in association with ICICI Lombard General Insurance Company Ltd. The Rajiv Gandhi Shilpi Swasthya Bima Yojana, which provides healthcare facilities to an artisan, his spouse and two youngest dependent children, also covers death and total permanent disability due to accidents to the extent of Rs1lakh. The cover is available up to the age of 80 years.

An ICICI Lombard press release says the company will pay for the expenses incurred by a policyholder in the course of treatment of an insured ailment or procedure in any hospital or nursing home within the country subject to an overall sum insured of Rs15,000 and a sub-limit of Rs7,500 per illness. The policy covers pre-existing and new diseases, maternity expenses (limited to first two child births), dental and optical treatment, domiciliary hospitalization and out-patient department treatment. The scheme will also pay for unani, ayurvedic, homoeopathic and siddha treatment.

Textile Minister Shankarsinh Vaghela told reporters at the launch, that the scheme aims at covering 50,000 artisans in the first phase, and some 800,000 families in the first year of its introduction.

K Bharathan, country head, government solutions group, ICICI Lombard The Rajiv Gandhi Shilpi Swasthya Bima Yojana said artisans can also avail cashless facility in more than 3,500 hospitals across the country. For treatment availed in a medical institution outside the insurer’s apprivced list, the expenses incurred wil be reimbursed.

The premium payable per year per family is Rs100 for scheduled-caste and scheduled-tribe artisans as well as for those below the poverty line or belonging to the North-East. For other artisans, the premium has been pegged at Rs200.
