New Delhi: At least 81 people lost their lives and more than 8 million people were affected in fresh floods due to excessive rains in worst affected Gujarat, Rajasthan, West Bengal and Odisha.

While the death toll touched 48 in West Bengal, 28 died in Rajasthan and five in Odisha, a home ministry statement said on Sunday.

A total of 3.69 million people across 9,691 villages of 210 blocks in 12 districts in West Bengal have been displaced due to the floods, while a population of four million in Gujarat and 480,399 in Odisha have been affected, the statement said.

In West Bengal, 48 deaths have been reported from various parts of the state during the floods, owing to lightening, wall collapse, electrocution, snake bite and drowning.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall had lashed isolated places in almost all of south West Bengal districts under the influence of Cyclone Komen, as reported by the state government, the statement said.

The state has deployed 121 boats for rescue and relief operations. A total of 5,672 cattle is also lost in the floods, it said, adding that the state government has set up 1,537 relief camps and has accommodated 214,306 people in them.

In Rajasthan, 28 people have lost their lives. There has been excess rainfall in most districts of the state and the situation is particularly “grim" in the districts of Jalore, Jhalawar, Baran, Sirohi, Barmer and Dungarpur, the home ministry statement said.

Apart from the State Disaster Response Force and the police, eight teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed for rescue and relief operations, in which more than 630 people have been rescued from, the note said.

In Gujarat, 14 districts and a population of about four million have been affected in the recent floods due to heavy rainfall.

More than one million food packets have been airdropped or distributed to the flood victims. Temporary relief camps have been set up in the affected areas and people accommodated on a need basis, the statement said.

Seventeen NDRF teams have been deployed for rescue and relief operations in Gujarat.

In Odisha, seven districts—Jajpur, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Bhadrak, Balasore, Jharsuguda and Deogarh—have been affected by the floods, the statement said.

Five people lost their lives and 644 villages and 480,399 people were affected.

The statement said 1,574 people have been evacuated to safer places.

While seven relief camps have been opened and 55 people accommodated in them, 132 boats have been deployed for rescue operations, it added.

Normal train services at Howrah and Sealdah sections of Eastern Railway (ER) have been restored with the removal of water from the tracks, said ER CPRO Ravi Mahapatra.

South Eastern Railways has also restored normal train services, though the trains have been running at reduced speed as the tracks at some places are still submerged.
