Thiruvananthapuram: Hitting out at the UPA government’s policies and priorities, CPI leader Gurudas Dasgupta on Tuesday said it was a “total failure” on all fronts, including checking inflation, price rise and communal violence in different parts of the country.
He was inaugurating a public meeting organised in connection with the 39th national meet of AITUC, his party’s trade union wing here.
Referring to the issue of terrorism in the country, Dasgupta, also AITUC general secretary, said cosmetic touches like changing the Union Home Minister was not going to save the situation.
Putting P Chidamabram in charge of the Home Ministry in place of Shivraj Patil was just an exercise to “dupe the public” and such “superficial adjustments” were not going to absolve the government of its failures, he said.
On economic front, he alleged the UPA’s policies were in favour of the rich and the working class was bearing the adverse consequences.
CPI state secretary Veliyam Bharghavan, state Ministers Binoy Viswam, C Divakaran and AITUC president Paramod Chand Gai were among those present.
Before the public meeting, a rally of workers was also held in the city.
Apart from taking stock of the economic and labour scenario, the five-day conference, to be attended by 2,000 delegates from across the country, would work out an action plan to mobilise public opinion against the twin-dangers of terrorism and communalism, party sources said.
