New Delhi: A National Advisory Council (NAC) working group on enhancing farm income for small land holders through market integration recommended on Monday that building “collectives of smallholders” would help in tackling issues such as markets, value addition and post-harvest activities, according to a release.
The NAC is headed by Congress party chief Sonia Gandhi and sets the policy agenda of the United Progressive Alliance-run government.
“The overall direction of the recommendations is to create a policy environment that enables small and marginal farmers to build their collectives and grow as vibrant institutions and play an effective role in the market in more equitable terms,” it said.
Other suggestions of the working group, headed by NAC member Ashis Mondal, includes establishing an apex central organization to support farmer producer organizations and creating “conducive policy regime” to access startup and investment capital.
