Women’s groups and other activists organized a rally on Thursday that marched on Parliament Street in Delhi. The hundreds of demonstrators who turned up raised slogans and demanded the Women’s Reservation Bill be passed in the monsoon session at the Parliament. Participants included Javed Akhtar, Shabana Azmi, Brinda Karat, D. Raja, Jayanthi Natarajan and Shabnam Hashmi. A delegation from the rally went to the Rashtrapati Bhawan later in the day, to take their case to the President
The UPA government has said it will introduce the bill during the monsoon session. The BJP, the Left and some other parties have also said they support it. But some regional parties like the RJD and SP, oppose the bill in its current form and are demanding quotas within quotas.
