Politics | Meira Kumar set to be Lok Sabha Speaker
New Delhi: With the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party, or BJP, proposing her name to the post of Lok Sabha Speaker, Congress member of Parliament (MP) Meira Kumar on Tuesday filed her nomination papers. Kumar is expected to be elected unanimously to the post on Wednesday.
Once elected, Kumar, a Dalit leader and a five-term MP, would be the first woman to hold the post.
Meanwhile, the BJP has nominated Karia Munda, a veteran tribal leader from Jharkhand, as its candidate for the post of deputy speaker of the Lower House.

Ahluwalia may retain post at Plan panel
New Delhi: The Union government is likely to reappoint Montek Singh Ahluwalia as deputy chairman of the Planning Commission. He is currently caretaker deputy chairman of the Plan panel, which is headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh as chairman.
According to a senior official close to the development, the Planning Commission will be reconstituted by the end of this week and Ahluwalia is the “front-runner" for the deputy chairman’s post. The official requested anonymity.
