New Delhi: The Indian Railways have registered over 3% growth in revenue earnings despite an economic crisis in the first two months of the current financial year as passenger bookings also showed an increase of 5%.
During April and May, the public sector unit behemoth earned Rs13,708.88 crore as against Rs13,265.63 crore which it earned during the same period last year, thus registering an increase of 3.34%.
Out of the total earnings, the total goods earnings went up from Rs9,126.99 crore to Rs9,340.39 crore between April and May, an increase of 2.34%, said a release issued by the railways.
Similarly, the total passenger revenue earnings during the period were Rs3,831 crore compared to Rs3,636.57 crore during the same period last year, registering an increase of 5.35%, the release said.
The revenue earnings from other coaching amounted to Rs396.36 crore during the period as compared to Rs357.85 crore during the same period last year, registering an increase of 10.76%.
The total approximate number of passengers booked between April and May 2009 were 1,203.71 million compared to 11,55.34 million during the same period last year, showing an increase of 4.19%.
