New Delhi: Concerned over the grim flood situation in 20 states which has so far claimed 1500 lives, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today ordered quick disbursal of funds to provide immediate succor to the affected people.

Out of the total corpus of 21,333 crore under the Calamity Relief Fund (CRF) for the period 2005-10, a sum of 4258.85 crore has been allocated for 2007-08, Information and Broadcasting Minister P.R. Dasmunsi said after a cabinet meeting which discussed the issue elaborately.

The government has already provided 1,292 crore for 19 affected states, he said.

The Minister said the Prime Minister has also asked the Water Resources Ministry to come back with a “decisive" plan based on the recommendations of the earlier Task Force on floods for consideration in the next cabinet meeting.

“The issue was dealt state wise with details of the support rendered till now and the Prime Minister ordered that further funds should be placed at the disposal of the affected states at the earliest", Dasmunsi said.

Bihar, which was among the worst affected states, has already been provided 500 crore and the second installment will be given after the utilisation certificate is provided by the state.

Dasmunsi said there would be a serious discussion on the flood situation in the monsoon session of Parliament beginning tomorrow. MORE PTI TVS MS ARC APS

Dasmunsi said more than 1500 people have lost their lives in the floods with states such as Assam, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra Orissa, U.P and West Bengal being the worst affected.

Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Goa are also affected by the floods due to heavy rains, he said.

On the system of disbursal of funds under CRF, the minister said out of the total funds of 4258.55 crore, 75 per cent of the funds amounting 3194.14 crore is provided by the Centre.

The rest of the fund amounting 1,064 crore would be the states share.

As much as 1598 crore of the CRF had to be release by June and the second installment of 1,596 crore is due to be released in September this year, the minister said.
