The government may want to encourage more mining to feed India’s commodities-starved industries, but it doesn’t intend to do all the prospecting by itself. Mint has learnt the mines ministry plans to follow the recommendations of a panel on natural resources. That panel, the Ashok Chawla committee, had proposed mineral mapping be outsourced. Most geochemical and geophysical mapping is currently done by the Geological Survey of India. The mines ministry hopes outsourcing some of this work will speed up the process.

Harley-Davidsons are a hit. The iconic American motorcycle company only came to India in January of 2010. But it’s already doing brisk business. While the company doesn’t share sales figures, Mint has collected data from dealerships across India that indicate it has sold some twelve hundred bikes this year. That’s a large number when you consider the total number of super bikes in India is estimated at about 4,000. Harley has tried to cut costs on some models in India by importing kits and assembling bikes locally. It has also tried to rope in more customers by offering servicing.
