New Delhi: President Pratibha Patil on Thursday inaugurated the initial phase of the National Knowledge Network (NKN), an ambitious project of the National Knowledge Commission (NKC) to digitally interconnect all educational institutions in India and promote concepts of e-learning.
The 15-gigabit resource-sharing network will interconnect all universities, libraries and laboratories for sharing of data and educational resources. A provision of Rs100 crore for this project has already been made for this in the 2008-09 budget. The network is also expected to play a major role in health care sector by facilitating telemedicine and medical education.
The ministry of human resource development and state governments would share set-up and connectivity costs.
