AAI chairman V.P. Agrawal removed after CVC denies clearance
For now, Alok Sinha, joint secretary in the aviation ministry, has been given additional charge as AAI chairman
New Delhi: In a surprise move, the aviation ministry on Friday removed V.P. Agrawal as chairman of the state-run Airports Authority of India after the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) declined to clear his name for an extension.
Agrawal’s five-year term ended in December but he was allowed to continue in the post. He was to retire in mid-2015 after having risen through the ranks of the AAI to the post of chairman.
“We gave extension subject to CVC clearance. The clearance did not come," said a top ministry official, who declined to be named.
This official said a new chairman will be appointed but “that process will take some time".
For now, Alok Sinha, joint secretary in the ministry overseeing the handling of airports, has been given additional charge as AAI chairman, the ministry official said.
Agrawal could not be immediately reached for comments.
