Tamil Nadu hikes liquor prices to stem fall in revenue
Tamil Nadu State Marketing raised prices by Rs10 for a 180 ml bottle
Chennai: Tamil Nadu on Wednesday hiked levies on alcohol to stem a fall in revenues from the sale of liquor.
Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corp. Ltd (Tasmac) raised prices by ₹ 10 for a 180 ml bottle. In October 2003, the government passed an amendment to the Tamil Nadu Prohibition Act, 1937, making Tasmac the sole retailer of alcohol in the state.
The state earned a revenue of ₹ 21,641 crore in 2013-14, marginally lower than ₹ 21,680.67 crore the previous year, official data shows.
Tamil Nadu levies excise duty on liquor manufactured in the state and a special fee on alcohol manufactured in other states but sold in the state.
