Cabinet approves forming panel on Mullaperiyar dam
To have a member each from Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Central Water Commission
New Delhi: The Union cabinet on Wednesday approved the constitution of a supervisory committee to implement last month’s Supreme Court (SC) judgment on the Mullaperiyar dam in Kerala.
The apex court had directed the setting up of the committee, while holding the dam to be safe. It had allowed the Tamil Nadu government to raise water level to 142 feet and ultimately to 152 feet, after completing strengthening measures.
The committee, which will have three members, will look into issues about restoring the dam’s safety for full reserve level (FRL) to 142 feet. It will also look into the safety aspects of the more than 100-year-old structure. While Kerala will provide office space for the committee, Tamil Nadu will bear the costs.
“To allay the apprehensions of Kerala though none exists about the safety of the dam, on restoration of the FRL to 142 ft, a three-member supervisory committee is constituted. The committee shall have one representative from the Central Water Commission and one representative each from the two states—Tamil Nadu and Kerala," the court had said.
