Gujarat MLA Shaktisinh Gohil asks to give up poll duties as infighting deepens
Shaktisinh Gohil was given the responsibility of 27 Assembly seats in Kutch, Surendranagar, Morbi, Jamnagar and Rajkot districts
Ahmedabad: Infighting within the Congress party in Gujarat surfaced on Thursday when party national spokesperson and MLA Shaktisinh Gohil asked the state leadership to relieve him of the responsibilities given to him in connection to next year’s Assembly elections.
President of Gujarat Congress Bharatsinh Solanki had earlier announced zone-wise responsibilities for top state party leaders.
Gohil was given the new responsibility of 27 Assembly seats in Kutch, Surendranagar, Morbi, Jamnagar and Rajkot districts.
According to a Congress leader, Gohil took the step as local leaders of Rajkot and MP Kuverji Bavalia were opposed to his selection.
“The people of Gujarat are fed up with the ruling BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) government and are looking up to Congress with hope. Hence, it is important that all leaders, workers and well-wishers of Congress in Gujarat let go off their egos and work together towards defeating the BJP," Gohil said in his letter.
Gohil said that he is ready to do any work as a party worker but will not take up any special responsibility regarding the elections.
Earlier this week, former Congress MP from Gujarat Jagdish Thakor resigned from all party positions, owing to his differences with the party’s state leadership. His supporters on Wednesday had staged a protest in front of the state party headquarters here, according to a PTI report.
Thakor, who represented Patan seat from 2009 to 2014 in the Lok Sabha, has sent his resignation letter to Solanki and Leader of Opposition in the state assembly Shankersinh Vaghela.
