Yogi Adityanath govt pushes Centre for Jewar airport
Jayant Sinha said the Yogi Adityanath government has written to the aviation ministry to do a technical evaluation of the Jewar airport project
New Delhi: The Uttar Pradesh government has asked the civil aviation ministry to do a technical evaluation of the Jewar airport project on the outskirts of Greater Noida, minister of state for civil aviation ministry Jayant Sinha said on Thursday.
Sinha told a press conference the government, which took over last month under first time chief minister Yogi Adityanath, has written to the aviation ministry to do the analysis.
Airports Authority of India, under the aviation ministry, typically sends a team to conduct technical analysis of the area, including air funnels for aircraft and land.
Sinha said there would be a need for a second airport in Delhi earlier than previously thought.
The new UP government is pushing for more infrastructure.
During a meeting earlier this month Adityanath asked officers to work on building airports at Agra and Jewar and proceed further with the central government, PTI reported on 10 April.
Airports fall under the purview of the aviation ministry while land is provided by the state government.
In this specific case, there are other limitations also.
The project falls under a so-called 150km rule which means GMR Infrastructure Ltd-led Delhi Airport has the first right of refusal over the project under certain norms when the it comes up for bidding.
Sinha also said the ministry was working on improving the capacity of Delhi airport as passenger traffic has shot through the roof and airlines are complaining of slot issues.
By the end of 2017, the airside capacity is expected to rise by 10% to 72-73 aircraft movements per hour.
A new Terminal 4 will also be built which will take over the functions of the existing Terminal 2 eventually and Terminal 2 will be scrapped.
A flight operations committee is also being set up to deal with challenges at Delhi airport. I will meet every month and guide and facilitate close cooperation in this regard among the various stakeholders.
