Political updates: Rajya Sabha passes two bills, India gets own GPS called NAVIC

New Delhi: Moving away from the daily disruptions in Parliament, the opposition and the government let the Rajya Sabha function smoothly on Thursday, which led to the passage of two bills. Meanwhile, Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) successfully launched the seventh and final satellite of the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System—IRNSS-1G—giving India its own navigation system NAVIC.

Govt, opposition strike temporary truce in Parliament

The government and opposition benches struck a temporary truce on Thursday, shelving their political differences to enable the Rajya Sabha to vote through two bills and press on with its lawmaking work.

Progress on Parliament’s legislative agenda came about after parliamentary affairs minister M. Venkaiah Naidu met senior Congress party leaders to persuade them to allow bills to be taken up in the Upper House, which has seen disruptions on several contentious political matters. Read more

India gets its own GPS called NAVIC

In a step that is expected to reduce India’s dependence on foreign navigation systems such as US Global Positioning System (GPS), India on Thursday successfully launched the seventh and final satellite of the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS)—IRNSS-1G. The four other countries/blocs that have their own navigation satellite systems are the US, Russia, China and the European Union. Read more

VVIP chopper scam: India asks UK to extradite ‘middleman’ Christian Michel James

The Indian government said on Thursday that it has asked Britain to extradite British consultant Christian Michel James over a scandal-hit deal the previous government agreed with Anglo-Italian firm AgustaWestland to supply helicopters to Delhi.

India suspended the deal in 2013 after Italian investigators began looking into accusations that AgustaWestland paid bribes to win the €556 million ($753 million) contract for 12 helicopters intended for use by the prime minister and other VIPs. Read more

Haryana Janhit Congress merges with Congress

Haryana Janhit Congress (HJC) led by Kuldeep Bishnoi on Thursday merged with the Congress in the presence of party leaders Sonia and Rahul Gandhi, but former chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda was conspicuous by his absence.

HJC was floated by Bishnoi’s father and former chief minister Bhajan Lal in 2007 after parting ways with the Congress as he was miffed at being sidelined by the party, which preferred Jat leader Hooda as the chief minister in 2005. Read more
