New Delhi: The government on 18 June reduced prices of complex fertilizers by up to Rs2,296 a tonne to encourage farmers to use them instead of regular urea and di-ammonium phosphate (DAP) so that soil fertility is maintained.

The Union Cabinet had taken a decision in this regard on 12 June.

Complex fertilizers would now be available in the price range of Rs5,121-8,185 per tonne from Rs6,980-9,080 earlier.

Complex fertilizers are those which have at least two nutrients, while regular fertilizers have only one nutrient nitrogen (N), phosphorous (P), potash (K) or sulphur(S).

The Centre has also urged farmers not to resort to panic buying, as it would only help black marketeers. It is “closely monitoring the availability of of fertilizers in consultation with states", the Fertilizer Ministry said in a statement.

With both claim and counter-claim going on between Centre and states on the availability of fertilizers in the country, the Centre also launched a toll-free helpline to redress the grievances of farmers.

Farmers can lodge complaints regarding non-availability of fertilizers in their areas and can also report incidents of blackmarketing at 1-600-114400 from any part of the country, an official said.

With the new pricing, the 10:26:26 (N:P:K) would cost Rs719.70 a quintal, while 12:32:16 at Rs763.70 a quintal.
