A list of few cyclones that have hit India in the last one year
Every year during the cyclone season in India, various tropical cyclones form in the Bay of Bengal or in the Arabian Sea, leading to strong winds and heavy rains.
Here is a list of few cyclones that have hit India in the last one year.
1) Vardah (2016)
Origin: West central and adjoining southwest of Bay of Bengal
Velocity: Severe cyclonic storm with a velocity of 100 to 110 km/hr gusting to 120km/hr made a landfall in Chennai on Monday around 3.30pm.While the centre of the cyclone hit Chennai around 5pm, its intensity got reduced by 6pm.
Rains: 7 to 19cm of rainfall occurred over southern coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, northern coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. While rainfall of over 20cm occurred at few isolated places.
Damage: 16 people were killed in Tamil Nadu and 2 people in Chitoor, Andhra Pradesh. Severe damage to property also occurred in both the states.

2) Nanda (2016)
Origin: Bay of Bengal
Velocity: With a velocity of less than 60km/hr made a land fall near Nagapattinum in Tamil Nadu on 2 December.This was only a deep depression and it never became a cyclone.
Rains: Rains upto 4cm were recorded in Cuddalore, Puducherry and Nagapattinam while Chennai received moderate rainfall.
Damage: No major damage to human lives
3) Kyant (2016)
Origin: East central Bay of Bengal
Velocity: With moderate to strong winds of velocity of around 35-45km/hr gusting upto 50km/hr crossed the southern Andhra Pradesh coast on 28 October.This was also a depression and never got intensified into a cyclone.
Rains: Moderate rainfall and thundershowers occurred in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu areas.
Damage: No major damage to human lives.
4) Roanu (2016)
Origin: Low pressure formed in the south of Sri Lanka
Velocity: The cyclone formed in the south of Sri Lanka, travelled upto the Bay of Bengal and made a landfall in the north of Chittagong , Bangladesh with a velocity of 80km/hr to 90km/hr gusting upto 100km/hr.The landfall happened on the evening of 21 May.
Rains: Torrential rainfall occurred in the Indian states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Odisha. Flood-like situation occurred in north-eastern states of Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram, Nagaland, lower Assam and Meghalaya.
Damage: 201 deaths in Sri lanka and 26 deaths in Bangladesh. People in India were also affected.
