NAC publishes draft recommendations on agro-forestry
Draft recommends that the national policy should focus on institutional issues that hinder the progress in agro-forestry
New Delhi: Congress party president Sonia Gandhi-led National Advisory Council (NAC) on Friday published its draft recommendations on forming a common national framework for agro-forestry or tree-based farming.
The council has noted that while there are several schemes focusing on tree planting or agroforestry, “there exists a lack of coordination among the schemes/departments, a lack of general vision and a coordinated implementation framework" to pursue it in a systematic manner.
Agroforestry refers to the practice of agriculture based on the idea of cultivation and conservation of trees.
It has recommended that the national policy should focus on institutional issues that hinder the progress in agro-forestry, clear the ambiguity over the definition of agro-forestry and addressing the need for a “simple and uniform" regulation for felling and transportation of trees planted in farmland. It has also called for facilitating participation of industries dealing in agro-forestry produce; create marketing infrastructure for such produce and developing a management information system for agro-forestry.
