Trade unions want govt to increase spending
New Delhi: A large number of trade union activists gathered in the Capital to protest against rising unemployment and asked the government to hike spending in agriculture and social infrastructure in order to create more jobs. About 30,000 demonstrators marched peacefully several kilometres from Red Fort to Jantar Mantar in the heart of the Capital.
The event, organized by the sponsoring committees of seven central trade unions, including the All India Trade Union Congress, Centre of Indian Trade Unions, and 30 other industry federations.
The protest came two days before the Indian Labour Congress, or ILC, meets to discuss the impact of the global financial crisis on the Indian workforce.
ILC is a platform for trade unions to hold talks with industry associations and the government at a tripartite level and has been instrumental in raising vital labour policies, including revising minimum wages, providing social security for the unorganized sector, and even opposing investment of pension funds in the equity market.
Last year, however, the government did not call any ILC meeting, which forced the Communist Party of India’s Gurudas Dasgupta, who is also the general secretary of the All India Trade Union Congress, to raise the matter in Parliament
