The Election Commission has estimated that 59-60% of voters in Gujarat cast their vote during the first phase of polling for the ongoing assembly elections held on Tuesday.
The turnout was more than 61% in the 2002 polls, but dipped to about 45% in 2004.
National spokesperson for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Prakash Javdekar, who is currently touring Gujarat said: “Don’t go by what the polls and television channels say. The turnout was bound to pick up. It was expected."
The BJP has fielded candidates in all of Gujarat’s 182 constituencies, the Congress, in 174 and the Bahujan Samaj Party, in 166. The second phase of polls is scheduled for 16 December and the final results will be announced on 26 December.
“We’ll only know the significance of turnout once we analyse the data .... We haven’t done that yet," Congress spokesperson Shakeel Ahmed said.
