Draft regulations for insolvency code likely to be finalised in November

The draft regulations for setting up the complementary ecosystem for the insolvency code and the new regime are likely to be finalised in November, when the board constituted under the law is scheduled to meet. These draft regulations will cover aspects of registration of insolvency professionals and agencies, insolvency resolution process for firms, the liquidation of insolvent firms and applications to judicial authority. New definitions under human trafficking bill proposed

The women and child development ministry has sent to the cabinet a draft of the human trafficking bill which contains new definitions for trafficking, rehabilitation for survivors of trafficking. The proposed bill also has provisions for cross-border issues related to trafficking and time-bound trials. Read More

All India Judicial Services exam expected

The law ministry is planning to bring an All India Judicial Services exam for recruitments to the lower judiciary, or subordinate courts. The same was recently discussed by the government in order to bring judicial reforms and meet the sanctioned strength of judicial officers in the country. Read More

Reforms to the Advocates Act suggested

The Bar Council of India is scheduled to suggest widespread reform to regulate law practitioners or advocates in its submission to the Law Commission. Greater powers to the Bar Council, the apex body for regulating lawyers, are part of the suggested changes. Read More

More power to National Investigative Agency for attacks on Indians abroad

The government is proposing to amend two laws—the National Investigation Act, 2008, and Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967—to allow the National Investigative Agency (NIA) greater powers to probe attacks on Indians outside the country. This will enable the NIA to launch an investigation into cases of violence or terrorism on Indian consulates, people and properties on foreign soil. Read More
