Heatwave conditions to abate from end of this week

Heatwave conditions in parts of central and north India will gradually abate from 27 May to 31 May, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Friday. “Heatwave to severe heatwave conditions are very likely at a few places over Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat, and at isolated places over south Uttar Pradesh, Vidarbha and central Maharashtra," IMD said in its forecast.

Jayalalithaa to be sworn in today

Tamil Nadu governor K. Rosaiah on Saturday invited chief minister J. Jayalalithaa to form the government after she apprised him of her election as leader of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) legislature Party. She will be sworn in chief minister along with 28 others, including her trusted lieutenant and finance minister in the outgoing cabinet O. Panneerselvam, on 23 May.

BJP’s show of strength for Sonowal’s swearing-in on 24 May

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is planning a show of strength for the swearing-in ceremony of Sarbananda Sonowal as Assam chief minister. Sonowal will lead the party’s first elected government in a northeastern state. The function in Guwahati is scheduled for 24 May. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP chief Amit Shah and other top party functionaries and ministers from the Centre will be present in Guwahati on Tuesday. Read more

Vijayan to be sworn in on 25 May, Mamata on 27 May

A 19-member Left Democratic Front (LDF) cabinet, led by chief minister-designate Pinarayi Vijayan, will take the oath of office on 25 May at the central stadium in Thiruvananthapuram. LDF convener Vaikkom Vishwan said the Communist Party of India (Marxist) would have 12 ministers, including the chief minister, and the Communist Party of India would have four members in the cabinet. Bhutan prime minister Tshering Tobgay will be among those in attendance during the swearing-in ceremony of Mamata Banerjee as West Bengal chief minister for the second consecutive term on 27 May.

Two years of Modi government

As the Narendra Modi government completes two years in power, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has planned a 15-day programme, starting 26 May, to showcase its achievements to the people. Among other things, the BJP will hold 200 press conferences across the country to publicize new schemes to be launched on the government’s second anniversary. Read more

HRD ministry to announce new education policy

In response to a query raised at the IndiaTV conclave last week, human resource development (HRD) minister Smriti Irani said that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government will be announcing a new education policy before it finishes two years in office on 26 May. According to reports, she said, “Under the new education policy, National Council Of Educational Research And Training (NCERT) will address all those challenges facing the education system and that it needs to address many issues as even students say they know more about renaissance than about Maharana Pratap." President to visit China this week

President Pranab Mukherjee will visit China from 24 to 27 May during which he will hold talks with the top Chinese leadership, the foreign ministry in New Delhi said on Wednesday, announcing the first trip to the county by an Indian head of state in six years. Read more

Harish Rawat to appear before CBI on 24 May

The Central Bureau of Investigation has asked Uttarakhand chief minister Harish Rawat to appear before the agency on 24 May in connection with a probe into the sting operation involving him. The CBI had last week rejected the Uttarakhand government’s notification withdrawing the case related to the sting operation.
