With the economy growing at a robust pace, employment opportunities are multiplying, particularly in the rural sector, with companies focusing on the untapped potential there. Mint presents a fortnightly column on job prospects in the sector.

I have shifted two jobs in the last one year since I got a hefty raise each time. But I am in a job that I do not like. Will employers consider me if I start applying again?

It is conventionally wise for an employer not to consider such CVs (resumes). At the same time, more and more employers need a large number of trained employees. So this criterion on switching jobs is sometimes ignored as long as interviewers perceive that such behaviour is not likely to be repeated. So, if you have compelling reasons to shift again, you may make an effort to communicate frankly the reasons for the successive shifts. At the same time, you need to realize that this behaviour on your part is not right—joining an organization to work there for only a few months upsets the plans of someone who had reposed trust in you.

I have an offer from a top-rated multinational corporation (MNC) whose key employees have recently quit the organization. I am receiving a good jump in salary and role. What should I do?

At the same time, if the exit of key employees pertains to some office politics or integrity issues or sheer gameplay by the competition, this seems a timely opportunity offering you exceptional circumstantial gains. Hence, you may want to ascertain the reasons and take a call accordingly.

I am 30 years old and work at the assistant manager level in a reputed Indian company. Last month, I got selected to one of the upcoming retail organizations at a well-negotiated compensation package. In response to my resignation, my current employer has matched my salary with the offer. What should I do? A change in job may also include getting a job at a station of my preference.

In order to arrive at a sound decision, you need to undertake a realistic comparison of each industry, company, interest and competency to deliver expected key result. In case there are no domestic compulsions, factors such as location and salary should be avoided as they tend to blur your vision. Normally, one of the key gains of switching jobs should be an increase in job responsibility to progress towards your long-term goal of building a strong career. At the same time, as a thumb rule, one should not stay back in an organization from where one has resigned as the old rapport usually gets disturbed and it can lead to mutual embarrassment.
