New Delhi: As the sun sets behind Raisina Hill, millions of tiny bulbs light up to outline the grandeur of New Delhi. Hundreds of people have been waiting for this visual treat and they clap and cheer loudly as the lights come on.

It’s an annual event. As Republic Day celebrations begin in the capital, all the main government buildings including North Block, South Block, Rashtrapati Bhavan, Parliament House and Rail Bhavan are lit up brightly right up to the 29th of January, when Beating Retreat marks the end of official celebrations
Business is brisk on the sidelines with cotton candy, bhel puri, and ice cream vendors catering to the crowds gathered to soak in the spectacular view. But the large number of police personnel present is a grim reminder that the nation has to be constantly vigilant under the threat of terror.
