NGOs ask PM to end clampdown, begin talks
Letter, signed by 200 non-governmental organizations across the country, stresses on the need for differences of opinion in a democracy
New Delhi: The government’s recent crackdown against international non-profit organizations such as the Ford Foundation and Greenpeace has led to concerns among civil society organizations, which, on Friday, came together to sign an open letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The letter, signed by 200 non-governmental organizations (NGOs) from across the country, stressed the need for differences of opinion in a democracy.
The letter says that while NGOs are open to scrutiny, the government, too, must explain the selective targeting of NGOs. It says many organizations work with both state and central governments and serve the marginalized sections of society.
The NGOs have asked the government to end coercive action against NGOs and donors and review all orders placing restraints on such organizations.
“Those we are currently aware of include, among others, INSAF, Peoples Watch, Sabrang Trust, Greenpeace India, Ford Foundation, HIVOS (Humanist Institute for Cooperation) and ICCo (Innovative Change Collaborative)," the letter stated.
The NGOs demanded a dialogue with the government to discuss issues of concern for both sides. It has sought amendment to the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act for clarity and transparency.
“We welcome surveillance and scrutiny on our actions because we have nothing to hide, we are fighting to protect the laws of the nation. However, this inspection cannot be one-sided and cannot start with suspicion," said Amitabh Behar, executive director, National Foundation of India, a grant-making and fund-raising organizations.
