MoEF gets SC notice on Vedanta bauxite mining
New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday issued notice to the union ministry of environment and forests (MoEF) for rejecting the stage 2 environmental clearance to Vedanta Resources $1.7billion bauxite mining project in Orissa’s Nyamgiri Hills.
The Orissa Mining Corporation had moved the Supreme Court through an Article 32 writ petition asking the court to direct the central government to grant clearances for the project.
The state government had recommended Vedanta for the project, controversially granting the requisite mining leases in the region.
MoEF has to respond within 4 weeks. UK-based Vedanta Resources Plc has been attempting to implement the project through its Indian subsidiary Sterlite Industries, which has also been served notice in the case along with the Orissa state government.
