MMTC floats tender to import 59,000 tons of pulses

New Delhi: State-owned trading firm MMTC has floated a global tender for import of 59,000 tons of pulses in order to improve the supply position in the domestic market and stabilise prices.
MMTC has sought 4,000 tons of imported pigeon peas (arhar) to be delivered during June-July period, the tender posted on the company’s website said.
The company has sought 20,000 tons of yellow peas (white matar) of French/Ukrainian origin for delivery during July-August while another 35,000 tons of Canadian/US origin to be shipped during September-November 2008.
The tender closes on June 10, and all the bids must remain valid till June 17.
MMTC has reserved the right to increase or decrease the quantity depending on the prices received in the tender.
The item-wise bid should be made for a minimum quantity of 2,000 tons each for pigeon peas and 10,000 tons for yellow peas. The tender prescribes that all the pulses quoted should be from 2008 crop.
The government had announced that it would import 15 lakh tons of pulses during 2007-08 fiscal through public sector trading firms MMTC, PEC, STC and cooperative major NAFED. It plans to import 15 lakh tons of pulses this year as well.
Pulses production in the country is estimated at 15.19 million tons in 2007-08 crop year, compared to 14.20 million tons in the previous season. The domestic demand of pulses stands at around 17-18 million tons and the gap is met through imports.
In March, the government had extended the ban on pulses exports by one more year.
