AIADMK parts ways with Left parties in Tamil Nadu
The AIADMK and the Left had forged an alliance on 2 February for the Lok Sabha elections
Chennai: The ruling All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) party of Tamil Nadu has decided to part ways with the Left, The Hindu newspaper reported on Thursday.
The development leaves the state without a non-Congress and non-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alliance for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
After failing to make progress on seat-sharing talks with the AIADMK, the two Left parties—the Communist Party of India and Communist Party of India (Marxist)—said they will reconsider their decision on an alliance with the southern party.
The AIADMK’s decision was conveyed to CPI (M) leaders late on Tuesday night by a team of senior ministers led by O. Panneerselvam, the newspaper reported. “We remained happy allies. Let us now leave each other happily," it quoted the team as telling them.
The party had been in negoitiations with the AIADMK for the last 15 days, but there was no progress, said G.Ramakrishnan, CPI (M) state secretary on Wednesday.
On February 25, Tamil Nadu chief minister J. Jayalalithaa announced candidates for all the 39 Lok Sabha seats in Tamil Nadu and one constituency in Puducherry. At the time she said that once a seat- sharing arrangement is finalized, the AIADMK will withdraw its candidates from seats allotted to the Left parties.
