The leader of al Qaeda in Iraq, Abu Ayyub al-Masri, has been wounded in a clash north of Baghdad, Al Arabiya television on Friday quoted the Iraqi interior ministry as saying.
It said an aide of Masri was killed in the incident, without giving further details. Masri is also known as Abu Hamza al-Muhajir.
A U.S. military spokesman in Baghdad said he had no information on the report.
Masri, an Egyptian, assumed the leadership of al Qaeda in Iraq after Jordanian militant Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was killed in a U.S. air strike in June 2006.
The U.S. military has described Masri as a close Zarqawi associate who trained in Afghanistan and formed al Qaeda’s first cell in Baghdad.
